GFYty FAQ

Common questions about this site and about making GIFs.

Is GFYty related to Gfycat?

No. GFYty is an independent blog and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Gfycat, its former owners or any GIF platform.

Can I upload or host GIFs here?

No. GFYty does not host, upload, convert or store GIFs. We publish articles about creating and using them.

Why are GIF files so large?

GIF uses an old compression method and a palette of at most 256 colors per frame, so long or detailed clips produce big files. Shorter loops, smaller dimensions, fewer frames and fewer colors all help. Read the art and science of creating GIFs.

Should I use GIF, MP4 or WebP?

Many platforms convert uploaded GIFs to video formats such as MP4 or WebM because they are far smaller for the same quality. GIF remains the most universally supported option for simple loops. See the technologies replacing the GIF.

How do I add captions to a GIF?

Most GIF editors let you add text layers per frame; keep captions short, high-contrast and away from the edges. Our GIF customisation guide walks through it.

Can brands use reaction GIFs from films or TV?

Commercial use of copyrighted clips carries legal risk. Check platform terms and licences, and get legal advice for specific campaigns.
